Fans have been eagerly anticipating the possibility of new Marvel vs. Capcom games, following the successful re-release of the Fighting Collection, and Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto has hinted at the company's "big dreams" for the future of the crossover fighting franchise. The recent re-release of SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos with rollback netcode has further fueled speculation about Capcom's potential plans for new crossover fighting games.

Capcom's Aspirations for the Future of Marvel vs. Capcom

Street Fighter 6 and Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics producer Shuhei Matsumoto shed some light on the future of the crossover fighting franchise, commenting on the possibility of more games in the series. The Marvel vs. Capcom franchise was put into a very big spotlight this past June, as Capcom revealed a collection of its past collaborations with Marvel. This release was a huge win for the fighting game community, as it bundled seven games into one package, re-releasing them for modern platforms for the first time.

The revival of Marvel vs. Capcom was celebrated by many fans on social media, as the series was seemingly dead outside the dedicated fighting game community circles. Most of this perception comes down to the polarizing 2017 release of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, which had a troubled development and was seen as a bit of a downgrade when compared to Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, despite retaining most of its stellar gameplay. Since Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics garnered a lot of goodwill, some are wondering if a new MvC entry is in the works, which producer Shuhei Matsumoto commented on.

In an interview with Dexerto, Shuhei Matsumoto spoke about the Marvel vs. Capcom franchise's future, stating that Capcom has "big dreams," and that there is maybe an opportunity for a new Marvel vs. Capcom or Capcom-based SNK game. The biggest hurdle, however, is that it would take a lot of time and effort to make a new entry, but one of the best things that Capcom could do, in the short term, was to re-release the old classics in order to get these games to a new audience and show how Capcom does care about the series.

Both Marvel and Capcom Aimed to Revitalize the Crossover Series

Matsumoto noted that Capcom and Marvel had been in talks about bringing this collection to life for many years, and it came down to timing. Marvel was on board with bringing back Marvel vs. Capcom through the Fighting Collection re-release, too, as it was paying attention to community-based fighting game tournaments for games like Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 at events like EVO and smaller venues. When asked if UMvC3 could one day get a rollback netcode update, Matsumoto comments that they do have big dreams and that they're taking things one step at a time.

While Matsumoto says that crossover games like these are a "big dream," the potential for new installments is greater than ever now. Earlier this past weekend, in another left-field announcement, a re-release of SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos shadow-dropped on PC, PS4, and Nintendo Switch. The crossover game between the two companies was developed by SNK, and was re-released with rollback netcode. While it's too early to tell, the potential for new Capcom crossover fighting games seems more likely now than before.
